L'Homme des Flandres
Directed on the set of "Flandres", winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes 2006, this film delivers an analytical making-of in which the approach of filmmaker Bruno Dumont is laid bare. The camera tries to elucidate the singular relationship established between the filmmaker and his protagonists, non-professional actors, to whom he demands an intense emotional investment deliberately drawing on their personal stories to nourish the characters; an in vivo method in which words gradually lose their importance in the face of the poignant authenticity of the feelings, Bruno Dumont asserting with conviction that what is at stake for the spectators is not to understand but to feel. The follow-up of the film's editing also reveals his approach during which sequences can be totally abandoned without any major concern for the script. This film captures all the artistic demands of this singular approach.
