To the west of the port of Dunkirk, the Braek dike is erected to separate a vast steel and petrochemical complex from the North Sea coast. The dike is a frontier between the natural order (the beach, the sea, the waves) and the industrial ogre that make up the factories and refineries. It borders a very beautiful beach which, in summer, despite the dangerousness of the place, is frequented by the holidaymakers of the region. A frontier between two worlds, this dike is presented here as a meeting place for people from all walks of life and as a place for reflection on the notion of freedom in the face of the risks and necessities of industrialisation.
