The characters pass the torch of the story to each other according to the surrealist principle of the exquisite corpse. The Foucault's maid fails to keep an eye on little Veronique, thus marking the beginning of a series of events that turn everyday behavior upside down. "To denounce a certain French society, Buñuel chose not the sordid indictment but the corrosive good humor that should make a mockery of the established order. However, Buñuel is not content to paint caricatures: his guignolade functions in an apparently familiar universe where are introduced, surreptitiously, irrational elements." Gérard Frot-Coutaz, Cinema, September 1974
