In the 17th century, after the death of his beloved wife, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, a Jansenist who had retired to the country, took refuge in music. With his daughters Madeleine and Toinette, he gave viola da gamba concerts which attracted the nobility. However, he refused the offer to come to Versailles to work for the king. Reluctantly, he took the young Marin Marais as a pupil. Very gifted, but with a more brilliant conception of music, he abandons Madeleine, whose lover he had become, to go to the Court. Madeleine commits suicide. M. de Sainte-Colombe locks himself more and more in solitude. However, before dying, he reconciles with Marin Marais.
