In a village in the Périgord region, during a wedding meal, Miss Hélène, a friendly young school principal, meets Popaul Thomas, the local butcher, a veteran of the Indochina and Algerian wars. They meet again and become good friends. One day, a girl from the neighboring village is found murdered with a knife, but the police search is in vain... Hélène begins to suspect Popaul.
