1686, Madame de Maintenon, secret wife of Louis XIV, creates the school of Saint-Cyr. She wants to educate the young girls of the poor nobility to make them free women. She also hopes to redeem her past faults and those of the king. Anne and Lucie, inseparable friends, are among the young students. They grow up and Madame de Maintenon realizes that they are not the asexual angels she dreamed of for her salvation. Little by little, she transforms her school of freedom and intelligence into an austere and virtuous house. Lucie falls under her influence but Anne tries to resist.
