Anne-Marie, ardent, proud and daring, has just left the bourgeois world out of mystical enthusiasm. She takes up the veil in a religious congregation welcoming prisoners released after their sentence and strives to help one of them, Thérèse. Once released, Therese murders the man who was the cause of her imprisonment and then goes into hiding in the convent. While a police investigation is going on outside, Thérèse creates a disturbance of conscience in Anne-Marie, causing her to be dismissed from the convent. Anne-Marie will go to the final sacrifice for Therese's redemption.
