A Decent Factory
Multinationals are seeking to become ethically correct. The issue is all the more sensitive for Nokia, a Finnish company, when it moves its production to China, where labour is cheap. Its director of ethics visits the Chinese factory to monitor their Chinese suppliers and try to remedy the consequences of relocation: corruption, human rights violations, neglected hygiene and housing. But what is a good company? While multinationals have recently been trying to develop a new ethical image, the question of social responsibility extended to subcontractors remains one of the major challenges of globalization. But do these Western companies really have the means (and the will) to impose new rules on subcontractors?
