In 1833, a group of travellers, who had come by stagecoach, spent the night in an isolated inn in the middle of the mountains, run by an innkeeper couple, Pierre and Marie Martin. A jovial monk arrives, to whom the owner's wife confesses that her husband has the habit of serving his guests poisoned soup in order to steal what they have on them and that he then buries them in the garden. The story becomes more complicated as the monk tries to save the lives of the other guests without betraying the secret of the confession.
