The painter Frehorfer is consumed by a secret and no longer paints much. It soon becomes clear that what is obsessing him is the abandonment, some ten years earlier, of a large painting that was to have been his masterpiece, La belle noiseuse. When he decides to make up for lost time, the long-neglected work takes its revenge, and it is the illusion of happiness that it will tear apart. As for the painting, finally completed, it will keep its secret, its inhuman secret.
