In England, in a small village in Yorkshire, Celia, wife of the school principal, goes out into the garden. Her eyes fall on a pack of cigarettes. She hesitates. Should she give in to temptation or not? Both a rigorous exercise in style and fantasy, this film and its counterpart "No Smoking" are a typical example of Resnais' "multiple film", each offering six different endings to a common beginning. The title of the films lies in the choice that a character makes at the beginning of the story: to smoke a cigarette (Smoking) or not (No Smoking).
