Paul Braconnier, married for years to a cantankerous and alcoholic woman, decides to kill her. He goes to a lawyer who is on his hundredth acquittal and thanks to his knowledge learns how to kill his wife in an unpremeditated way. At the trial, he is acquitted and his return to the village is a triumph.
