To get revenge on her lover who leaves her, Hélène asks Agnès, a cabaret dancer, to play the comedy of love to Jean. Hélène pays Agnès' debts, moves her and her mother into an apartment and sets up her plan: the marriage of Jean and Agnès. It is after the wedding ceremony that Hélène reveals to Jean her revenge: the woman he has just married was living off her charms before she met him. Modern adaptation of the story of Mme de Pommeraye told by Diderot in "Jacques le fataliste".
