A major regional daily newspaper, "La Libre République", was in crisis: advertising resources were declining, sales were down and its director, Hirsch-Balland, was seriously ill. An independent newspaper, "La Libre République" had been entrusted to the Resistance at the time of the Liberation. But a thousand of its shares had already been bought by a large press group. Faced with this threat, some old Resistance fighters were looking for a way to save their newspaper. One name stands out for them: Judith Therpauve, 57 years old, a former Resistance fighter herself, and widow of one of the regional leaders who was deported during the war. Today, living alone in a large property, she takes care of her roses. Her children, who come to her every weekend, she does not like them, finds them mediocre. When she is offered to run the newspaper, Judith Therpauve knows that it is a losing battle, but she accepts.
