Michel Descombes lives peacefully in the Saint-Paul district of Lyon where he is a watchmaker. He raises his son Bernard alone since his wife left him. One day, Bernard is accused of killing a guard at the factory where his girlfriend worked. Commissioner Guiboud, a man who is half-blasé, half-compassionate, asks Michel to help him. After the arrest, Michel takes the defense of this son of whom he realizes that he knew nothing.
