The idea to make Trans-Europe-Express, his second film, made in 1966, came during a trip on this train with the project of staging a character who was making a film. Shot in Paris and Antwerp in natural settings, Alain Robbe-Grillet plays himself an archetypal author, alongside Jean-Louis Trintignant and Marie-France Pisier... In this interview, he analyzes especially the cinematographic writing of this film, which upsets the traditional structures of the story. It is this struggle for narrative power that fascinates Robbe-Grillet.
