À l'ombre des masques

2004-2006, the exhibition Africa Remix at the Centre Georges Pompidou takes stock of contemporary creation in Africa. Between sequences in which artists and curators are busy with the complicated hanging of these extraordinary works, the film takes a contemplative stroll through the works on display. Each of them becomes a gateway to a little-known part of post-colonial Africa. Through the way the artists talk about their plastic work, their condition as artists, the film evokes, without dwelling on it, the various statuses of art in African states, the representation of societies by artists but also the stakes of Africanness on the art market. Following the example of the exhibition, the film shows a non-exhaustive inventory of contemporary African creation, which seems to offer a particular renaissance to the notion of poor art.
