Under his affable exterior as the boss of a bazaar in Toulon, Victor Agardanne is in fact the leader of a gang of thugs. During a skirmish, he kills one of his accomplices with a punch belonging to shoemaker Bastien Robineau, who is unjustly accused of the crime. When the latter is sent to prison, Agardanne decides to take care of Bastien's son. He entrusts money to his wife Adrienne, but she, who has remarried a mobster named Cerani, squanders it and does not take care of the child at all. Seven years go by. Bastien escapes from prison and returns to Toulon. He takes refuge with Victor who agrees to hide him, hoping that the investigation will not be reopened. But while Bastien falls in love with Madeleine, Victor's wife, Cerani senses his presence...
