La Maman et la putain
with Françoise Lebrun, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette LafontAlexandre asks Gilberte to marry him. She refuses, life being too difficult with him. Alexandre lives as an idler in the small apartment of Marie, a saleswoman in a fashion store. They seem to be in great need of each other, despite the arguments that oppose them. At the terrace of the "Deux Magots", Alexandre sees a young girl who looks at him, Veronika. The last emblematic film of the New Wave, La Maman et la Putain is surprisingly offbeat in its theme: while society demands a redefinition of love relationships, Jean Eustache's film ends with a very traditional marriage proposal, and shows the sadness of a certain "sexual freedom" or the despair linked to voluntary pregnancy termination. Jealousy, a feeling that everyone tries to evacuate, strikes each of the film's main characters in turn.
