Il nous montre comment elle se nourrit de sang frais et en détaille toutes les étapes. En introduisant des extraits du film Nosferatu de Murnau (1922), Painlevé se plaît à mêler à son propos scientifique, de subtiles allusions aux mythes qui entourent le vampire, dont cette chauve souris sanguinaire d'Amérique du sud est à l'origine : ici toute l'horreur que dégage cet animal confère au film quelque chose de fascinant, cruel et barbare, magnifié par la musique empruntée à Duke Ellington.
