Raymond Depardon invites us to discover a forgotten world, that of the Lozère, a region of medium mountains and small rural farms. In the intimacy of their homes, we meet retired farmers: Marcelle, 85 years old, Louis who lives alone, two single brothers who live with their nephew and niece and modestly run a small farm . Exchanges of words are rare, sometimes in Occitan. In these isolated villages of Haute-Loire or Ardèche, people talk about the course of the calves, the sale of an animal is bitterly discussed, the veterinarian comes by to de-worm the cows, register the last births, rare contacts on the outside world. But everything goes in slow motion, the years weigh on these working lives. The minimalist filming style that the director imposes on himself reveals extreme destitution and human loneliness accentuated by the silences and fragile immobility of the people filmed.
