The film describes the process of creative writing. Part of the story takes place in the imagination of Clive Langham, a famous writer who knows he is going to die and who, on the eve of his seventy-eighth birthday, writes his last work, a story in which he talks about himself, his memories, and whose main characters are members of his family. The links and differences between art and life are revealed. But believing he was painting others, he painted himself, revealing some hidden aspects of his personality.
