Witness to a murder committed by Roubaud, a station master in Le Havre, Jacques Lantier, a locomotive engineer, becomes the lover of Séverine, the assassin's wife. This secret brings them together and Séverine incites Lantier to kill Roubaud whom she hates. But Lantier suffers from a terrible illness that prevents him from living out his passions in love. Adaptation of the novel of the same name by Émile ZOLA.
