The naked, lifeless body of a renowned Catholic writer is found on a Breton beach. Inspector Lavardin investigates in a familiar (he had an affair with the widow) and unappetizing environment. He pushes his cynicism to the point of inventing a culprit who is not the one who accidentally caused the death of the detestable notable.
