Son of peasants, Charles Saganne is an officer who came out of the ranks. In 1911, he leaves France for the Sahara and adventure. He fell in love with the young and pretty Madeleine de Saint-Ilette whose parents opposed their union. They made sure that Saganne was sent to the Saharan south to keep him away from their daughter.
