Emma Bovary, the daughter of a wealthy peasant, raised in an elegant convent, was married to a medical officer in a Norman village. Emma was bored, despised her husband and his entourage, and fell in love with an aristocrat, then a notary clerk. In debt, manipulated by her creditors, she commits suicide.
