Antoine Doinel married Christine Darbon. Still unstable, he is temporarily engaged in an unusual job: he dyes flowers in the courtyard of his building to make them more attractive. Christine gives violin lessons at home. She is soon pregnant and Antoine, who has lost his job as a florist due to poor chemical handling, joins a major American company that conducts hydraulic research and experiments. Christine gives birth to a boy, whom she wants to call Ghislain, but who will be called Alphonse. It is under this first name that Antoine declares him at the town hall. Alphonse, always fickle, meets a Japanese woman, it's the first time he cheats on Christine.
