Ephraim is an Ethiopian boy whose father flees the effects of drought and goes to look for work in the city. He takes his son to live with distant cousins in an area unaffected by drought. Ephraim has difficulty adjusting to his new life, but he has a constant companion - a pet ewe who follows him everywhere he goes. One day, his uncle tells him he will have to let his ewe be slaughtered for the next religious feast. Ephraim resolves to do whatever it takes to save his only friend and make his way home.
